Potlotek First Nation is home to Chapel Island, a place that is historically and culturally significant to the wider Mi'kmaq community.
Oral tradition records that Chapel Island has been a gathering place for the Mi'kmaq since before European contact. Mi'kmaq peoples from all over Atlantic Canada continue to gather at Chapel Island each summer for a pow wow, and the Grand Council of the Mi'kmaq meets there twice yearly.
Chapel Island was recognized as a National Historic Site in 2002.
The existing elementary school and education administration office on the Potlotek reserve are located on the road leading to the Chapel Island wharf. One element being considered in the design of the new high school site is the significance of this gateway as Mi'kmaq visitors from around Atlantic Canada travel down that road each summer to reach the island.
